Valeria Contreras, Founder of Valcon Comics, joins Olivia Belcher to discuss Valcon Comics in two episodes of Local Gems, a podcast for KRUX Radio. KRUX 91.5 FM is one of New Mexico State University’s two radio stations, located in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Student-run and operated, it serves southern New Mexico an eclectic mix of musical genres and more live performances than any other station in the region. KRUX 91.5 FM has been serving the Las Cruces community since 1989 with an alternative choice in music & diverse programming.

ON CREATING EL CARTOON IN TWO LANGUAGES FOR THREE CITIES:

“[The Borderplex Region] is so important to me and so personal to me. Growing up here, I think it’s so special. There’s no place like this where three cities, three states and two countries come together. We go back and forth between these communities so much and interact with people from all three communities so much. I think having a project like [El Cartoon] for kids, especially when they’re so young, to sort of have something in common–reading this newspaper together. I think it’s something really special to me and really inspired me to pursue [El Cartoon].”
